My water heater continuously to fill up even when I turn off the shut off valve on cold side. It running out of both line going into the water heater... Only way to stop filling up is to cut the main house supply off.. I checked the pressure relief valve it is not stopped up,and it sends out pressure... It is the pressure valve or shut off valve?

It sounds like the shut off valve is stuck in the open position or failed I would deal with shut off valve first , and check your water pressure high water pressure would cause the T&P valve to open, Thanks.

John thanks, but nothing works.. Change shut off valve,and relief valve.. Even when I shut off the water to water heater it still fills up and runs in water heater and comes out through the cold dip tube base that come out the top of water heater.. Also water come out the top where is screwed together.. Want to make sure it's the water heater before spending money.. I can hear a humming in the wall near washer and dryer when I turn water on full..

If you changed the shutoff and the relief valve and you are still getting water back into the water heater that blows the T&P valve off then that can only occur as a result of a CROSS-CONNECTION between hot and cold water valve/faucet, etc. Try shutting the washing machine valve(s) as Harold suggested.

If that fails to stop flow then I'd suggest calling in a plumber at this point. Have him look for another cross connection and have him look at the PRV (pressure reducing valve), if present. Temperature and pressure readings should be taken as well.

If you've added a sprinkler system, a backflow preventer or had anyone mess with the water system in any way as of late I would suspect the issue to revolve around that work.

You could be hitting on something. I do have a sprinkler system in the garage, and I do hear some noise in the pipe in the roof over the washer and dryer area .when this was happening... In FL now now, deal with it when I get back home.. Shut main valve off.. Two level home pipes, 3 baths, pipes over..

Yeap there is woop woop noise coming from pipes above washer and dryer... keep the same noise with water shut off from washer...

Yes valve was off.. Install a shut off valve on hot water side just to keep water running in house.

Close the hot water stop valves at all single handle faucets. When you have water pressure on the cold side and none on the hot, water can flow from the cold side to the hot side when you open the faucet.

Probably should close the hot stop valve at all faucets. Same thing can happen with a two handle faucet if both sides of the faucet are opened.

I think Mark nailed it when I mentioned CROSS CONNECTION. If you want to see if you can check it out yourself shut off the cold water supply to the heater and the stops to every one handle vale in the house but leave one hot water valve open. The water stops coming into the heater, right Now, one at a time start to turn on the angle stops. Listen for any flow and check the open hot water valve. When you hear flow at the heater and get pressure out of the open valve you've found the culprit. Good luck, Tom
