Sheet metal that heating element is attached to is cracked and black. Dryer runs cold so I replaced element and it still runs cold. Blower seems to be working also. Could I have cross the wires at the top by mistake on the plug at the top of the element housing or would it now come on at all?

Doubtful... you probably blew 1 of the 3 fuses... I believe one is resettable like a gfic. You can buy a kit with all 3 fuses for about 6 bucks from your local appliance dealer

You will have to use a meter and find the bad safety or fuse. There are fuses on each end of the element and safeties elsewhere. Clean out all parts like the blower and filter housing and anywhere air is channeled. Anything you miss will cause a safety to blow.
