I took him to the vet & she said that he might hv a little cold and gv me antibiotics to give him with food but HE WON'T EAT! & I can't get him to take the small little pill. My family has been so excited to hv a new family member that we give him constant love and attention and take him everywhere with us.. Could this be part of the problem? Hes nervous about his new home? He ate a hot dog (b4 I realized they were bad for him) and that was the first day I brought him home and ever since he won't eat. The vet didn't express much concern just advised I give the meds with food & come back in about 10 days.. Am I being over protective?

I think your worrying a little too much, the thing with dogs is that they take a while to adapt to new evironments, much like us. Aslong as you leave him alone for awhile with food and water, he will eat once he is ready. Try not to fuss him too much, let him come to grips with his new surroundings. If he is rescued he obviously hasn't had the best start in life, so just give him time and let him settle in :)

Stop worrying :)

Thank you!! I do have an update! Since I posted we took him outside and now his stool is runny.. My new worry!! :) however calming down enuff to think clearly this could possibly be that he is drinking water with no solid intake..? Should I just leave him alone and keep it quiet as possible only taking him out for potty and a short walk he seems to like? A little history.. I did rescue him from a kill shelter but when I took him to the groomers for a bath they said someone took great care of this dog because even his ear hair was plucked and his nails were trimmed, saying it looked like he had been groomed within the last 2 weeks... But I have no idea what his diet was like before or anything.. My Calvin's neutering appt is next Friday the 13th (eeek! ) so I just want him to be well enuff to make it as I hv to show proof of the procedure by 8/1/12 or I will be fined by the city..

Yeah, his stool is probably runny because of the viral illness your vet spoke of, combined with that of not eating solids. Perhaps put a couple of bowls down for food, some dry food, some wet and perhaps even some cooked chicken (very few dogs can resist chicken! )

I hope things go OK, and yes just try to keep some distance, let him settle down. You may find he is not feeling too well due to stress, although that will fade over time.

Good luck

Ryan.

Thanks for your help! I have dry food, wet food, chicken broth, lots of water, and rice cooked in chicken broth cooling down so I can put it out for him in a little while.. last 2 questions for now.. :) is how many days is too many for him not to eat? And what about the antibiotics? I CANNOT get him to take it.. Should I just wait n let it run its course?
As I typed this... He threw up again... :( only this time it was yellow! Im a nervous wreck!
Thanks for all your help!

Yellow is stomach bile - yes, I'd call the Vet. Dogs dehydrate very, very quickly before your eyes.

I was in animal rescue - the food is BOILED chicken or BOILED hamburger, fat RINSED off, I was told 5 to 1 with kibble. Straight chicken, no.

And, yes, the medication could give him loose stool.

What would I do? I'd call my Vet and ask. This dog's history is unknown to you so it's not something you have natural gut feelings about.

Call and ask.
