I had an electrician add an outlet in the kitchen from the adjacent room which is the dining room. The tech sparked the outlet in the dining room (which is where my thermostat is) and flickered the lights for a split second. The next day... boom... no AC.
Is this a coincidence or could he have fried the transformer to the furnace?

I replaced the stat today and nothing. I have to think the transformer is out but I am a rookie when it comes to hvac. I have been on all sites and can't find a similar instance.

I have checked breakers and they are fine. They were not tripped. I know the stat is not connected to the breaker but the furnace is.

What could this be? I have a honeywell gas furnace and its about 7yrs old. It was just serviced 1 month ago. (btw I just bought and moved into this house two weeks ago). Typical huh?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Geoff, I would have called that same electrician the moment I noticed no AC.

Well the funny thing is I did just that the next day. He told me there was no way that was possible given that the stat is not connected to the breaker. He said he talked to his brother-in-law who apparently has been a hvac tech for 20+- years and he has never heard of or seen anything of the sort.

So do you think that the transformer is blown? Or is it something else more costly??

I know it could be a million different things... but what is your gut guess?

I would like to have a little more knowledge ("ammo") to go back at him tomorrow. He's a very nice guy, but if that could definitely happen and he's telling me otherwise... maybe he's not all that nice.

Please let me know a little more what you think that could be... maybe a couple scenarios... I know its impossible without seeing but take a stab.

Thanks again!

Geoff

Just because his brother-in-law has not seen the dark side of the moon does he too believe it does not exist. He should have offered to come out pronto to confirm his work is not at fault. The stat may not be on that breaker, it gets its power from the furnace or batteries. Can you confirm 24 volts coming into the stat? Was the AC runnibg anytime after he left the day of the sparking?
