We installed a new hot water heater a few yeas ago and since that time have developed a odd series of noises, that appear to be related to the heater installation, but that I can not pinpoint. The issue began with a very loud popping noise, which sounded a lot like a pressure relief vale popping and releasing some pressure. It literally sounds like someone came by the water heater and smacked it with a hammer (Just one stroke and done) There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it occurs, but it is particularly disturbing when it happens just as your falling asleep!

The second set of noises that has developed is a loud rumbling noise. Again, no specific event that we can tie the noise to. The noise can be extremely loud, to the point of sounding like something is about to explode, then it quickly mellows and subsides to silence. It will generally last no more than about 5-15 seconds. This noise is not particularly tied to the firs, although they both seem to originate from, or near the hot water heater.
