I live in the US and would need to take passport size photos in the size of 3.5cm by 3.5cm. Where to take / how to take it as the defualt size in US is 2in * 2in

Unless you're good at photoshop or similar application (which I'm not) I would recommend that you use this app. I've printed many passport photos with it with absolute ease. Passport photo software - do it yourself (http://www.onthegosoft.com/passport_photo.htm)

The trial will work and will give you an idea how to position your picture.

Many post offices offer passport services and will take the photos according to government guidelines. Check with your local post office (often only one post office in a city does it so you may have to driver farther than your closest one, but they will at least be able to point you in the right direction).
