As a small business owner we often get youth to help us and pay them via cheque, not as employees but as individuals. Most of them earn anywhere from $30-$200 a month depending on how much time they want to put in to helping. We have not been paying them as employees and am trying to figure out a few things:

How do I enter them in to Quickbooks? These kids aren't employees nor do they have business / gst #.

Is it better to set them up as employees? The problem there is they have to be paid for a full 3 hours if they are employees whereas we only really need them for one or two...

We have about 7 kids that help us out.
Can you help me out?

Thanks!

I don't know your specific tax requirements or labour laws but the basic principle is this is a cash payment and you record it in the cash payments journal which in Quickbooks is the cheque function just as you would any other payment you will have to set it as a GST free item
