The News says that there is a new virus going around that affects Microsoft Windows. Can the virus get on the computer from opening AskMeHelpDesk emails? Is the only way to get this virus from opening emails?

There are always new e-mail borne viruses around.
The main way of infection is opening an attachment.

As AMHD mails DON'T have attachments you are completely safe.

Of course in this day and age you shouldn't be online without anti virus software at least and a good Tin Foil Hat never hurts either.

Anyone going online without a good security suite is like driving without insurance. It's a stupid risk.

One needs anti/virus and anti-spyware utilities. If you have a broadband connection you also need a firewall. Not only do you need such software but you need to keep them up to date. New threats come out almost daily. The threats are generally identified by a "signature". You need to update the signature file otherwise its like using a condom with a hole in it.
