My mother died. My grandmother(Her mother) is trying to just take everything. What should I do, there is a car left and stuff left in her house. Do I get anything or can she just take it all without me getting anything?

ANY question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area.
Did mom have a will? If not her things get dispersed according to the laws of the state.

No and I assume the person taking things is your grandmother, you may need to talk to her and tell her nicely that you know she will want some of your mom's items but that the estate will need to be accounted for.

Thanks a lot for the almost instant response. This helps with some information, I have been searching Google for hours.

Yes my mom and my father have been divorced for years and own nothing together. But my grandmother had the life insurance on my mom and thinks since she is paying for all her funeral that she just takes it all. I don't want everything I just want some stuff. I want to have a leg to stand on if and when we get into it.

The estate should be paying for the funeral, so grandmother will have to be or should be paid though the estate for those bills. Why did you not jump in and take care of the funeral and your moms property ?

Its not a property its just a vehicle and personal belongings, like furniture jewelry and cloths and such. My mom lost most of her things in the divorce a few years back. She just passed on Thursday of last week so its not all taken care of yet. My grandmother is from out of town and hasn't come into town yet to take care of things I just want to get a jump start and know how to handle and do things.
