I am 39 years old and have always had very regular cycles. But in the past 3 months, I am having 2 and sometimes 3 cycles a month. I am currently bleeding and my last cycle was 12 days ago. It always starts with a dark brown blood and then after about a day, turns to bright red. I am in no pain and it completely catches me off guard because I don't show my normal pre-mentrual signs. I am not pregnant and I am not on any medication and I am not under any unusual amount of stress. Just concerned about this abnormality. Can anyone shed some light on this...

When was your last yearly physical? If it has been a year, it may be time to get a check up.

Now, you say that you are 39. This could be considered perimenopause. It is the period of somewhere around 10 years give or take (it is different for every woman) in which our bodies are preparing for menopause. Some women get many or lengthy periods, while others just skip around.

It would be in your best interest to contact your doctor about this. You don't want to become anemic, and too many periods or lengthy periods can cause iron deficient anemia. Please make an appointment to get checked out.

My last check up was in 2001. Thanks for your response. I have definitely considered premenopause but the information I have received on this states that cycles become less frequent not more frequent. I am also experiencing pretty severe abdominal pain. It got so bad last night that I vomitted. Today it is a dull, ache in my lower abdomen. I do worry about anemia because I have felt light headed and dizzy. I don't have a doctor in the area we live now but I just got a referral for one. I am making an appt. I hate going to Doctors but I realize this needs immediate attention. Thanks for the info
