We just bought a new house and the fool that lived here before us put an outlet for a stove where the outlet for the dryer should be.. so my question is if I change the outlet.. will it work or will there be too much electricity still going through the wires? I don't know exactly what makes the stove outlet have more power then the washer outlet.. I was just told it did

A range generally uses a 40 or 50 amp circuit, may be a 50 amp receptacle that you see and is on a 40 amp circuit breaker, which is fine.

A dryer uses less power, and normally needs a 30 amp circuit.

No problem to use a 40 amp circuit wiring for a dryer, however, the breaker does need to be changed to a 30 amp, to properly protect the dryer.

It may be best to hire an electrician to come in a check the circuit and change out the receptacle and breaker to the proper sizes.
