Totally change your strategy. Be quiet when you used to yell. Don't slap or spank. Instead, sing in a happy voice a made-up song about what you want him to do. If it's cleaning his room, you sing and begin picking up things and making the bed, and encourage him to join in and help you. Or whisper and make it like a secret thing. The point is to make him strain to listen and to make it fun.

Have you ever had a sit-down meeting with him? Talk with him about how you are going to put up a job chart and that he gets stickers or a checkmark (placed by you) when he finishes his chores each day and then will get a small reward (he makes a reasonable list that you approve or not--write them down) at the end of each week.
