Farha, religiously you are not allowed, as both sects are at loggerheads to each others, but if your parents are liberal, you can. However, there are people, who marry the people of other faiths, even as the rivalry between two sects of same religion is more bitter. There will be more problems of a Shia-Sunni marriage, than of a Muslim-Christian wedding, but still, if your society, your parents and your elders have no problem, you can. It is but a fact, that if they do not permit, there bitterness can cause risk to life also, as often killings happen, what we call honour killing. Just talk to your parents. Or, elopement is the option, which I shall never, never suggest.

Honour killings in 2012?

Yes, honor killings still do happen in some parts of the middle east. Being that my studies in Islam was as a woman, in the US. I don't know much about what is allowed and what is not. Or what is being done about it (or if it is even still encouraged)
But I do know they still happen. And last I had heard, the Shiite leaders have banned them. I don't know about the other sects though.
