I have some 12 gauge wire that I am going to wire up to a 12V circuit. Is there a standard for the smooth and ribbed wires? + = ribbed or + = smooth?
Thanks,
John O

On clear looking wire the ribbed is the neutral... not sure how to explain clear looking wire though... it's kind of like speaker wire... two wires side by side coated together... flat... this probably isn't helping much lol.

I am not sure there is any standard for 12 volt. Since the ribbed is neutral or ground in AC systems, you might make it negative. It is interesting in AC black is often hot, but the most common color for an automotive ground. Green is always ground in AC, but a popular current carrier in automotive.

Just don't ask #18 wire to carry many amps. My old handbook doesn't even go down that far. When it comes to heating up and setting a fire, it is the amps that count, not the volts.
