7x+9y=40
x=16-3y

For 7X + 9Y = 40 just substitute 16 - 3Y for your X. Now your equation = 7(16 - 3Y) + 9Y = 40
Now just sovle for Y.
When you solve for Y substitute your answer wher the Y is and solve for X.
