View Full Version : Can a landlord request a deposit for a cat when one was only required for a dog?

I recently asked our landlord if it was OK to get a pet. When we moved in they said all animals were excepted, just let them know what kind and I needed to carry renters insurance. Now we have chosen to get an animal and the landlord is bringing up all these rules and stipulations. We asked about a dog, and I am disabled on Social Security Disability, and on Section 8 housing. I am able to get a prescription for a pet, but my landlord is saying that even with the script if he doesn't want one, we can't have 1. Also there was never an amount discussed about a deposit besides, 4 cats-no deposit and dogs-low deposit. Now he's even saying that if I get a fish he wants to know everything about it, pics and all and that I have to pay a deposit. He denied my request for a dog, even with my script, and now has to see what's a "legal amount " to charge.. CAN THEY DO THIS? HELP!!
