Alty - the qudestion wasn't 9 divided by 8, but rather 9! (that's 9 factorial) divided by 8!
Dirkafton: the numbr n! Is equal to n times n-1 times n-2 times... times 2 times 1. So 9! = 9 x 8 x 7 x... x 2 x 1. And 8! = 8 x 7 x... x 2 x 1. When you divide 9! By 8! You see that all the terms cancel except for that initial 9. Thus 9!/8! = 9.
