It is better to dumb a person than to stay with them because you don't want to hurt them. You are already lying and hurting because your heart is elsewhere.

You might think it's kinder to not put him "through that twice" -- but it's not kind to not be truthful about your feelings and then dump him later or not really be in the relationship with him because you're so busy thinking about some other guy. (unless you both agreed to see other people and take things slow)
