I've been reading for a bit now, here is where I am!
Piece of a gourd caused the belt to slip off at the transaxle (lodged it between the pulley and the fan), chewed up the belt a little. I got the belt back on the pulley, but the mower had greatly reduced power. Parked it.
Replaced it with an offbrand belt and found the same reduced power. Seems to have some slack in the belt. Got a JD branded belt and confirmed exactly the same as the one that was chewed up. When I replaced with it, now it doesn't want to move at all. It kind of lurches forward or backwards when I press the pedal but no movement on flat concrete surface.
I can confirm it is not the break or disengage, checked both. Based on other threads, I jacked up the back and turned one wheel, which turned the other (the opposite direction, is that right?)
I still have the mower deck off, if that matters at all. I had someone else operate it as I peered underneath. The belt and trans fan appear to be spinning until you press the forward/reverse pedal, and then it just stops.
I'll call JD to come get it later today, but then I'll be without it for a couple of weeks and my grass is getting long... if you know what is wrong with it, especially if I can quickly fix it, please let me know!
