Hello all,
I need to replace a galvanized "p" trap which was leaded in the brass shower drain. I've got the old "p" out and have a new cooper tail piece ready to go into the existing lead.
(The new "p" will be PVC and connected to existing downline pipes with a no-hub.)
My Q:
Can I heat the lead to seal the coper tail piece? Will it seal with or with out paste; or no paste needed? Should I follow up with some 50/50 solder to be sure?

OR... can I pour new lead on top of the old lead (I'll raise the tail piece 1/16th" higher) and will the new lead adhere to the old lead without a problem.
I've watched lead being used.. however never stopped to ask melting temps. And any specifics. Will MAPP melt the lead? Thanks.

If the lead ring's still intact and the copper tail piece will slide into it why not do what was done to t6he old galvanized tail piece and caulk it in. **or** you could shine the copper tail piece uo, coat it with flux and run a ring of solder around the copper pipe. The solder will mix with the lead and make a water tight joint. Mapp gas's hotter then propane so don't burn up the lead. You just want to solder the copper to the lead not pour a new joint.
Me? I'd take a set of inside and outsiude caulking irons and caulk that sucker in. Good luck, Tom
