I have a GE model XL44 gas stove. The self clean cycle won't start because the latch won't close. The first repairman said the latch mechanism was defective. The second repairman said the latch was okay, it was a bad circuit board. To replace that cost almost as much as I paid for the stove. Any suggestions?

Replace the latch Mechanism... and if that doesn't fix it learn how to clean it the old fashioned way... unless you are ready to buy a NEW gas stove. You can use it the next 30 years without it being able to self clean if money is tight. Its just more work.

And personally if its more than a couple years old... I'd buy a new one before I put 50% of the replacement cost into repairs.

There is a switch on the latch that you can check with a meter. If the switch is bad then all you need to do is replace it. I bet neither repairman checked that switch. The switch is only about $3.00.
