There are a number of possible reasons for irregular bleeding/spotting. Some may have to do with age. In the beginning years of menstrual cycles, and in the last few years, irregular bleeding can be common.
Hormones often play a role as can certain types of growth, such as polyps and endometriosis.

It would be wise to have your gyn do a check to determine a possible cause.
