I have an older HP 9695C Pavilion. For a while now it has been rebooting itself on its own. I took the cover of the side and that seemed to help a bit. I'm not sure if it's related but if you move the computer around and then try to restart it nothing comes up on the screen. To fix that I would reseat everything in there and after a while I would get it to work again. So now I moved to a different location and setup the computer and the screen was blank. After reseating everything I finally got it to boot up but realized the CPU fan and Power supply fan aren't working. I tested the CPU fan with a battery and it worked. Either I pulled a wire out inside or maybe the power supply is not working. Also, someone told me to unhook everything including HD except for powersupply, video, and ram to see if that would pin point the problem. Now the computer doesn't boot up to windows anymore. Also when I turn it on I hear something running in there but there are no beeps what so ever. I really don't have the money to take it in right now. Does anyone have any ideas for me? If you unhook the HD, then Windows will not load, that is clear.
- does the power supply's fan at least turn one or two turns when you switch it on (I mean the physical AC switch - if none is there, try disconnecting/reconnecting the line cord)?
=> if yes: you may have a short-circuit. Selectively disconnecting items (the motherboard too) will point to the culprit.
=> if no: your power supply may be defective.

Yeah the fan doesn't move at all when I first turn it on. If I buy a power supply and a CPU fan do I have to get the same wattage as the one I have right now. Can I get a higher wattage and a bigger fan? What do you think?

Begin with the power supply only, then check if the CPU's fan is running (if money is important).
Same wattage or higher is OK, although lower might work too - they usually are oversized. But take no risk - buy the same or higher.
