These are large holes excavated up to 6 inches in diameter and shredding the wood underneath

Well normally to find bugs.
They must think your tree is tasty.

They are cavity nesters and are trying to build a nest.

If the holes are round, and getting bigger, they want to build a nest inside the tree. If the holes are oval, they are looking for insects to eat.
