My husband and I have been trying to have a child for several months. The books I've read have differing advice on when the woman is the most fertile. Some say 14 days after the first day of your period, some say 14 days before you think you are going to start your next period, and so on. I am just clueless on when my most fertile time would be. Could you shed some light on this?

That;s because it is an inexact science. Each women is different. Have you been doing a temperature chart? I believe there are tests that can indicate ovulation.
Trying for only a few months is nothing. Many people can go for years.
You should make an appointment with your OB/Gyn to suggest what you can do to maximize fertility. After maybe six months of no conception, then it may be time for both of you to be tested to determine if there are any problems. There are several things, some very small (like does your husband wear boxers or briefs?) that could affect this.
But the most important thing is to relax, enjoy the process and worry less about the results. I'll use my experience as an example. We tried for over a year, we were seeing a fertility specialist farther away because he was supposed to be the best. But it became too much to travel to him, so we switched to one closer that he recommended. It took a couple of months to get an appointment with him. When we went for the appointment he told us we were pregnant. My wife relaxed thinking nothing could happen until we started working with the new doctor and it happened. So stressing about it can definitely have an effect.
