View Full Version : How do I tell if the outlet in my patio is going to apt power supply, or the houses?

I live in an apartment that is actually a giant house, but the power supply for each apartment is separated (independently metered).

There's an outlet in what serves as my patio right next to my door, and lately the work crew that has been fixing the outside of the house (not my side) has been using the plug in.

I'm trying to make sure they're not using MY power (my meter), that I have to pay for, and that the bill is actually going to the general house meter, and the company that owns the house is actually paying for this.

Is there an easy way to tell if the power is my power, or the houses?

I have a breaker, would that cut power to the outlet if it were mine and I turned it off?

Martrers...
If you can plug something in to that outside outlet to verify that it is on, a small lamp for instance, and then turn off "all" of your circuit breakers... if the lamp is still on it's not on your meter!
Of course if you turn all your breakers off and the lamp goes off... it is on your service.
Good luck!

If you have ( and you should have) a main to your power, turn it off, if this outlet goes out, it is on your power.

That's fantastic! Thank you!

Unfortunately, this ended up telling me it was my power they were using. Fortunately, they seemed to have genuinely not known it was mine, so I walked out and told them why I did it and they moved to another outdoor plug. :/
