I recently purchased a Hampton Ceiling Fan. I have assembled the fan without difficulty and have begun to wire the fan.
The directions are simple in terms of white to white, black to black and ground to ground. However, the ceiling outlet that was pre-wired for a fan with a wall switch also includes a red wire.
The fan comes with a remote control for the light and the fan.
What do I do with the red wire from the ceiling?

The red most likely is the switched wire intended for a light on a no-remote controlled fan/light. Since you have a remote control, all you need to do is cap the red wire.

Thanks tkrussell for your response. I did cap the red wire and the fan works perfectly with the remote. The pre-wired switch is not functional, but that isn't a problem with the remote.

Sometimes the red is used to supply power to the fan motor without interrupting the operation of the light . The black is used for the light which is controlled by your light switch. If there is no use for the red, simply cap it off with a marrette.

If you want the pre-wired switch to be functional, connect the fan to the red instead of the black and cap off the black.
