She was my soulmate and my whole world, it has hit me hard and I don't know what to do, she says she can't help her feelings, I lost my job a few months ago and things have been hard since then. She wants to stay friends. I hurt so much and don't know what to say or do?

First off, find a job. Second, occupy your free time with work. Third, excel. Forth, find someone better.
Your ex will know she made a mistake then.

You have to let yourself heal at your own pace. Turn this heartache into a motivator or a stimulant to motivate you to be the man that you want to be.
5 years is tough and I really know how you're feeling right now. When you were in a relationship for too long, you just don't know what to do anymore if that relationship ends. I know how much it hurts but the difference in our situation is, I didn't lose my job then when I was heartbroken. Be with your family and friends and ask them for emotional support because you really need it, right now.
You have to respect your ex's decision and let her be happy. You have to get back on your own two feet again and don't depend on anybody to make you happy. You have to be strong at this point of your life. Getting a job would be difficult nowadays but you have to try your best everyday to look for a job.
Talk to your friends regularly try to get it all out of the system to ease the pain. Once you communicate it, you'll notice that the pain is slowly going away.

Update: I saw her this weekend and she was flirting and joking with me, I walked her home and we had a cuddle and a small kiss. I really can't make her out. She says she needs space but then keeps texting me. Am I best off shutting her out? Is she playing mind games with me? So confused. I don't think there's anyone else in the picture, I did think that might be the case but I'm pretty sure it isn't. Any help would be great.

She put you in the friend zone, where its okay to stay in touch, but with no commitment, or obligations. Yes you tell her you have other things to do, like get a job, and get over the break up.
