My condo has the old style pull out main switch 1972 when this condos were built.It is located by the elctircal meter outside on the side of the house. Can I just pull it sraight out with out any gloves or protective wear. I am having problem with my lights blinking on and off and think their may be a ground lose in the ele. Box. Please help.

That's a main fuse but I'd sure lilke a picture to be sure. If it is a main fuse you can pull it bare handed BUT I am not sure of your electrical skills or knowledge so don't advise you doing much inside the box. Is it just a few lights or the whole house receptacles included? Tell us about your skills.

If this is the main fuse then there will be nothing there for you to see. Behind the fuses is all covered so it is relatively safe to change fuses.

This is not something a DIY should be troubleshooting since you'd be in the main box where there are unfused connections from the utility.

Also, the ground would have nothing to do with it. It is a very common misconception that a "loose ground" is the cause of many electrical problems. In a car maybe, but not in a home.

The way I read this post, Rick wants to pull the main disconnect so he can look for a loose connection inside the condo, which of course will not be a ground wire.

Since rick has not been back yet I can't offer anything further but I am interested in Harolds and Stan's comment about a loose ground. Making a leap here, I sense that Rick might not been high up on the lectric repairs projects. Frequently folks who don't normally work with electrcity mix up their terms. I am taking a long shot here but maybe Rick is saying ground but really means neutral Maybe Rick could clear this up. If he is looking for a bad ground both Harold and Stan are on the mark but if Rick means neutral, white, he should straighten us out.

Jason, You should post in the main group. But we'd have to know the brand of wire you have. Then we can get the OD of the cable and do the math. How many do you want to sleeve?

At the OP, sounds like a possible loose neutral. The biggest risk in pulling the old main is not being able to get it back in, or breaking it. I recommend calling a licensed Electrician, and consider updating the service.

There could b a few problems.. is it all lights in condo or a specific room?
