Hi,

My fiancŽ &i have been trying to conceive.. We've tried on Feb 27 &maybe a couple of days after that. Well, there's sort of a problem.. my cycle is really irregular so ill never know when I'm really pregnant. Dec 20 , 2011.. was my last cycle, so if I go by a regular cycle today ( 3/20/12) should be the day of my cycle &it isn't here at all. I don't know what to do &what makes matters even worse is I misplaced my wallet so now I can't visit a doctor for an appointment. I have taken maybe 5 pregnancy test and all were negative :( but I think its because I took them so early. I have also taken ovulation test.. &i'm not ovulating.. what should I do? Anyone.. please help!

Hi QShearin,

How long have you been trying the ovulation tests? It can sometimes take a few months of using them to determine when ovulation is most likely to be occurring.

You are correct, with irregular cycle it will be difficult to determine possible pregnancy from the lack of a period.

How long have you been trying to become pregnant? It can take many months, even with regular cycles and good timing. When you find your wallet, consider seeing your doctor to discuss ways to try and help regulate your cycle. From there you will be better able to use the ovulation tests and hopefully get an idea of when you might be most likely to be ovulating.

Until then, you will just have to try a test each month and see what happens. Since you are trying to become pregnant, be sure to be taking a prenatal vitamin or a multivitamin. It would also be wise to make any lifestyle changes that you know would be healthy. This would go for you and your fiancé, since good health can play a role in healthy sperm.

Hello!

Thanks so much for the advice! :)).. I found my wallet &immediately made a doctors appointment for the 27th . I'm excited &nervous at the same time. I didn't give full detail of what's really been going on also. I've been experiencing abdominal cramping, also.. made in 2wks of conception I was extremely nauseous for some odd reason.. that was on &off. I was also getting slight cramping on my left side (I don't know what that's about. My breast aren't sore &i haven't been spotting or anything though. Oh, &i also crave for sweets like muffins, cakes, or ice cream (I can't help it). I'm crossing my fingers hoping for the best. Again thank you so much for the information (it helped)!!

Hello Everyone!

I'm back to do a quick update since my last question. Before I went to the doctor I had all these symptoms of being pregnant. The only symptoms I did not have were vomiting (morning sickness), breast tenderness, & the infamous missed period (because mines are irregular.. VERY IRREGULAR) I had little fatigue, on & off nausea, & also on & off cramps (mainly abdominal cramps, & some on left side of my abdomen). I was so convinced that I was pregnant. I took about 7 hpt & they were ALL negative. I finally went to the doctor yesterday. They gave me an ultrasound, vaginal ultrasound, a blood test, & they of course tested a cup of urine. Everything came out fine, but I'm still not pregnant... But how could that be? I probably said this before, I tend to Google things all the time & I saw that there were many women who turned out to be pregnant even though doctors said that they weren't. They told me they found a little yeast & a little bacteria. So I'll be taking something for that, but I won't give up on trying to find out if I am truly pregnant. Is there anyone out there that has ever had this problem?

Did you get the blood test results back already? It would be very unlikely for a pregnancy not to show up on a blood test if you became pregnant at the end of February. The off and on nausea and cramps, may have been due to the slight infection they found. Or perhaps you had been fighting an illness. While early still, the vaginal ultrasound would likely have picked up a gestational sac if you were pregnant.

I can understand you're really wanting to be pregnant, but it may just take some more time. Did you discuss your irregular cycles with the doctor? If so, what was suggested?

You can always just keep trying pregnancy tests at home over the next several weeks. One a week, for example. If you are indeed pregnant, you will likely get a positive result within the next couple of weeks.

Certainly continue to prepare the best that you can while trying with taking a prenatal vitamin and healthy lifestyle choices.

Hello...

I"m here once again with this whole "pregnant thing". Ugh! I said I wasn't going to give up because for some reason I knew something was wrong, and now... I am for sure something isn't right. Okay, soooo... My fiancé and I (and probably half of the human race) have this thing where someone says the softest words and we're suppose to listen ( confusing, I know). Well, it's like an angel or something I don't know, but something told her last week (she said) to go get me a hpt, and yesterday something told me to get one.. well I did. I went to Family Dollar :/ and got a hpt. We were drying our clothes at the laundry mat when I decided to take it there.. so I took it and instantly saw the negative. I always judge it by the first sign I see. I didn't care I just placed it into my wallet and a little later I took it out and it had a positive sign.. I kept thinking something has got to be wrong. It was a faint positive. Weeks before this I went to the doctor twice for being sick and of course they ran pregnancy test and they were negative, so how could this be positive? I took two dollar tree test yesterday and they were negative, and I also took a test from a corner store this morning and it too was negative.. it's starting to confuse me a lot.. any suggestions anyone?

Hi,

When reading the results on a pregnancy test, go by the time frame stated on the test. Often it is within the first few minutes. With some tests, reading them later will show what appears to be a faint positive, but this would be considered invalid if it didn't show up right away.

Did your doctor say anything about the irregular cycles? Sometimes they may suggest a short time on birth control pills to see if that will help regulate your cycle. I know it goes against trying for a baby, but it would be short term. That may be something to discuss with your doctor.

QShearin,

When taking a HPT it's best to take it using first morning urine, right after you wake up, as the concentration of HCG is higher at that time of day. It's also very important to read the test in the time provided on the back of the box. For example, if the box says 5 minutes, wait the 5 minutes to read the test for the accurate response. If you wait longer than that, for example 30 minutes or more, you will get what is called an "evaporation line" which will look like a positive on the test, but it is actually a false positive.

QShearin, you've gotten the best advice you can get, and really the only advice that's valid.

Home pregnancy tests are only as valid as the person using them. If you don't follow the directions exactly, and read the test in the time frame indicated, then the result is not valid. If it was originally negative, then that's the result. Reading it later on will not be accurate, and the other tests you took after this false positive result, all showed negative.

I'm sorry. I know how hard it is when you're trying to conceive, you have so much hope, and then you find out that another month has gone by with nothing.

One thing to keep in mind. The average couple actively tries for 1 to 2 years before conceiving. Contrary to what many people believe, it doesn't happen right away for most people. It took me 7 months with my first and 10 months with my second, and I have a regular cycle, and know when I ovulate. It can take time.

Try relaxing about this. Just because you aren't pregnant right now doesn't mean it won't happen, but at least be willing to give it some time.

Have you talked to your doctor about any of this, about your irregular periods? Doula's suggestion to go on the pill to help regulate your periods is actually a very good suggestion.

Other then that, there's really nothing else we can tell you. Until you get an actual positive result on a pregnancy test that was taken correctly and read in the time frame suggested on the package, we can't say that that result was accurate, and there's really nothing we can do to change that.

Don't give up hope.

Baby dust your way. :)
