Trying to fax with Dell Windows 7. The number 1 is automatically added before the fax number, and this prevents the fax from going through. There seems to be no way to remove the number 1, and Dell Cust. Service is no help.

How are you trying to fax from the machine ?
Is this a fax server or modem connected to the phone line?

Sounds like this digit is added by the location information of your dialer program..

We are using Dell printer support to send a file through the attached printer. The system is connected to a DSL line. There is a local option in the Dell software; however, the US country code (1) is inserted before the area code and phone number. The "dialing rules" allow us to set our area code and has all prefix settings set to blank. It requires selection of a country which is "United States".
