I had a temporary crown placed about two weeks ago and have had continuous pain ever since. At first, it seemed to simply be a bite issue and went in to have it adjusted, and when the pain did not subside I went in again. I was concerned because when I flossed the back of the tooth with the temporary crown, the floss would shred and get caught on something. I thought maybe this was a hole or some sort of imperfection in the temporary crown leaving an opening and letting bacteria inside leaving the tooth inflamed and painful. The dental assistant on my second visit said everything looked fine with my temporary crown and attempted to file the rough piece down so that I could at least floss properly and adjusted my bite for a second time.. However, I still had concerns and kept asking about possible holes or something irritating the tooth. She went and got the Dentist and he informed me that I'd need a root canal because it sounded like with my pain that I had pulpitis.
The problem: ever since the dental assistant adjusted my bite for the second time, I have had NO pain in that tooth! I have had some gum pain in between the two tooth directly above the temporary crown, but from my examination it looks as though there is a small cut that is causing it to swell, although I am not sure if that is truly the cause.
If my pain was simply a bite issue and is now corrected, I won't need the root canal... However, I am sure the dentist would still suggest I get one to be safe, and my concern is not only convincing him that I may not actually need the root canal, but also that by not having it, having potential complications down the road.
