The Rise Is 55 Inches... The Stringer Is Cut Out 9.25 Inch Thread.. 6.25 Inch Rise.. Stringer 12 Inches.There Is A Wall On Each Side Of The Steps & I Have A half Inch On each side For Drywall Leaving no Room For a Cover Board.. I would Have To Make The steps Narrower To Put In a Cover Board Just Saying.. The Steps Are 36 Inches Wide.Is The Cover Board Necessary Or Should I Put The Thread Tight Against The Drywall? Just Looking For ideas Or Different Ways.. Thank You.

The side stringers(cover boards) on finished inside stairs serve to purposes. They support the treads and kick plate and aid in giving a finished look to stairs. If the stairs u are putting in are going to an unfinished area and are for utilitarian reasons then the side stringers are not necessary. There will be movement when walking on them and will rub on the walls if fit tight.

The side stringers also give u some flex room and make installation easier.

Maybe I am misreading or not understanding your question. Once a stringer is cut that's the end of the question. If you cut a stringer for 8 steps you can't convert to 7. Building codes determine the rise of a stringer and that can vary from state to state. Try this calculator to see if you can build a ste case using only 7 steps but that would require cutting a new stringer. Hope I understood you correctly. I agree with u as to having to cut new stringers if changing to 7 risers. The rise would be 7.85 '' or 7 7/8''.
