We have galvanized piping in the attic and unions that are exposed, we were told that they need to be replaced because of leakage may occure. Thank you

Hi hugon

I am going to guess that we are talking about galvanized water pipes, right?

If so, then I'll tell you that a union is in no more danger of leaking than any of the other galvanized fittings in the house, so I see no reason to replace any part of the system unless you have reduced pressure/volume issues.

With that being said, however, if you are in the middle of a remodel project and it is handy to replace the galvanized piping at this time I would recommend that you do so as galvanized piping is old and will eventually cause issues, but again, issues more like clogged pipes/reduced pressure/volume... not so much burst pipe issues, OK?

Glad to discuss...

Mark

Is this pipe subject to freezing, attic get very cold where I am. I agree with Mark about the union. However,
You're acting like this pipe's a new remodel that hasn't seen cold weather yet. Is this the case? Back to you, Tom
