A load bearing wall carries the weight of your roof or the floor joists of a second floor, then tranfers to a wall on the second floor to carry the roof.

The purpose is to carry weight from above. Then in some sense distribute the weight over a larger area using beams or headers to support. Ultimately releiving the weight at the floor

The outside walls are the primary load bearing means, the interior center walls bear the center span weight of ceiling and second story joisting right down into the basement or crawl space girder joist supports directly onto pier or bondwall foundation footing down the center into hardpan excavated soil. The loading cannot be cantilevered more than 2 feet normally by design.
