View Full Version : Faucet runs, bangs and then stops

We have an Ikea faucet in the bathroom. Suddenly tonight, the hot water tap stopped working. When I turn it on, cold water runs for a few seconds, then there's a bang and the water stops. The cold water tap is fine. Hot water comes out of the bathtub (single faucet). If I turn the hot water knob slowly a quarter turn, water will flow but it is cold. If I open it all the way it flows, bangs and stops.

We have a tankless water heater (electric) so it usually take a few seconds for the water to heat up. However, with the faucet opened slowly at a quarter turn, it still won't heat up after a couple minutes.

Suggestions?
Thanks!

HI Walshta

By your description, it sounds like the hot faucet washer/cartridge assembly has come loose and needs to be replaced.

Here, as you said, "cold water runs for a few seconds, then there's a bang and the water stops". That is the washer taking a second or two to PARTIALLY dislodge and clog the inlet to the valve body somehow.

At a slow water flow the washer doesn't lift as high off the inner seat and doesn't clog things. This slow flow also explains why the water doesn't get hot for you because the TANKLESS WATER HEATER has a minimum flow requirement before it will fire off and heat the water... ;)

Shut off the water to the faucet and disassemble the hot water side of the faucet... problem should be obvious once you remove all the parts! Parts should be available at IKEA online if you have the faucet model name/number... click on link below:
