I'm in quite a lot of pain with my back, I've had a MRI scan on my spine my doctor has said I have artharitus of the lower spine, I'm on strong painkillers already, and morphine patches but the pain is getting worse, can anyone give me some more advice on stronger pain relief.TAHANKS!

Only a Physician can prescribe, of course, and recommend, based on your past history and allergies as well as the progression of your arthritis.

I doubt you will be given anything stronger than morphine patches unless you are hospitalized.

You probably need to get into a mild exercise program. I have arthritis in my low back, and if I didn't do stretching and other movements, I'd be flat on my back in a nursing home. Yes, you're in pain and don't want to move, but a trained therapist will work with you to gradually build up your endurance. As you become more flexible, the pain will lessen.

***ADDED*** A few yoga stretches might be just the ticket. Find a yoga instructor to show you and work with you, then you can do them on your own at least twice a day. Yoga is getting more and more press for helping people with CP and other physical disabilities.

Don't overdo painkillers please because you may become an addict. Addiction should be the least of your problems. Try going to a massage therapist too and ask for a mild massage so your spine won't take much stress. If your doctor said to take the strong painkillers every 2 hours but you're still in a lot of pain, try taking another brand of strong painkillers. It is safe to take more than recommended dosage of painkillers as long as it's of a different brand. If you're taking Hydromorphone or Dilaudid, try Oxymorhphone (Opana) or vice versa.

Here is a link that will give you the list of strong pain relievers for you to consider: http://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=16&m=1334232

"Pain killers" are by prescription. The OP can't simply decide that this doesn't work (or is too strong) and move on to another.

These are prescribed by a Physician and that Physician controls what is prescribed and in what dosage.

What type of painkillers are taken every 2 hours?

I've just had a full spine MRI it showed that I have arthritus of the spine, I've had 4 or 5 steroid injections in my facet joints, to try and ease my pain, but the longest that I've been pain free was about a month, I was on morphine patches, (Bu-Trans) but after a few months it started to bring me out in a rash, so now I'm on morphine tablets, at the moment they are working, and I get some relief, doln't anyone have any ideas for more long lasting pain relief. THANKS!

I think you are at the end of your rope if morphine doesn't work and you should talk to your doctor; your pain threshold is very low because morphine is given to terminally I'll cancer patients and it does work for them.

Legal meds stronger than morphine are methanol and fentanyl.

Heroin is not legal, but only given to terminally ill cancer patients.

I'm scared now, you say that morphine is my last hope of being painfree, I was on the patches 20mg per hour, but they only seemed to last 2 or 3 days, the patches were suppsed to last a whole week, I went back to my doctor, she has now given me tablets, ZOMORPH 30mg, I take 1 twice aday, it relaxes me so Ican get some rest from pain, at least these are working for me.

I'm now doing Tai Chi, it's all slow movements, the first couple of classes, really caused me pain, but it has lessened now, and my movement has really improved, and my balance is a lot better, although I still have to wear my brace, I think that will be for life, it has opened up my joints, I'm coming to an end of my 2 years course, plus I do them everyday at home, it has helped me a lot.

I am glad you have found a solution. Pilates would not have helped it puts too much pressure on the spine and all joints.

Yes, this is a bit more then just arthritis, creativegoth, if you are in that much pain. I think you had better change doctors and have some in depth tests done. You are already on morphine and it doesn't get stronger then that. Have you tried morphine and marjiauna?

I was diagnosed with MS many years ago, it never showed up, so that tells me there is a fine line in some diagnoses.

I think I nixed pilates in a previous response.it is a gruelling workout for someone in your situation. I wonder if your surgeon has ever tried it, I have and it wasn't for me!

Hi creative, this is an old post, 2012. Best to read the time lines because only those who replied get notification.

I suggest you start your own thread, because there may have been some new developments in this field. I am assuming you have arthritic pain, or something similar
As well.

I'm glad your brought up your old post. The last 2 years have been increasingly tough for me too, with more and more generalized pain, and very specific increase in pain in 3 areas. I won't go into them. I will tell you one thing that has helped me.
I found that a memory foam mattress was no longer enough softness. First I bought an air mattress ($15 from amazon) and put it on top, and spend months adjusting the amount of air. Basically, I need it to be only about 1/4 inflated. Then, because it kept slipping off the memory foam, I bought a twin air mattress with built in pump for $38. It's at least 16" tall. It has a raised edge, so the smaller top mattress nests inside it and doesn't slip. Both needed airing out to get rid of the PVC (plastic) smell. I cover the top in a thick mattress pad too. Yours might cost more because I already had a pump for the little mattress. The bigger mattress should be very fully inflated, and because the vinyl expands, you need to keep it plugged in to add air periodically at first.

Anyway, it helps a lot. THC candies help, if someone can get them for you, or you live in a state that allows medical cannabis.

OH - and HEAT. I sit on a heating pad even on the hottest summer days.

I have bought one of those pulse chairs, with heat, it has 3 settings, that roll up and down my back, to relax my muscles, sometimes I have to sit on a cushion, so that it goes low enough to reach the base of my spine, after about half an hour, my muscles relax, or the machine switches off, when my muscles are relaxed enough, do you suffer the same conditions as me? I hope you are pain free...

Tick Hello again everyone, my pain is quite bad at the moment, but I think it's because of the damp chilly weather, what I didn't post was, when then took 2 disc's out of my neck, because I had a spur, a bit of bone, pressing on my spinal cord, but my sister noticed, that when we were out walking, I was dragging my right leg, when I'm tried, I wonder if I have had a slight stroke?.

We can't know why you are dragging one leg. I drag the leg that won't bend. Walking requires that you actually lift one knee a little.
Only testing and an exam by a doctor can tell if you had a stroke.
There are other conditions such as Parkinson's that can start that way.

You went for a WALK? I can't. Of course I live on a steep hill in a very rural area. I could walk around a flat town a bit.

Remember, HEAT and warmth and gentle movement, frequently.
