My father was disabled due to a heart condition which requires a heart transplant. He worked for a company for 30 years in the power plant industry. He was unable to return to work because his defibrillator/pacemaker would be affected by the generator. My question is that he receives some disability and some SSI monthly. It will be two years in November since he has been to work therefore he will be considered terminated then. He will be elgible for COBRA while waiting for full SSI/Medicare to kick in. The cost of his monthly insurance is $3700 which is not affordable with his income. He cannot lapse coverage because of the pending transplant. My mother is also on the plan and doesn't have horrible health but will be needing surgery in the next couple of months for an adrenal mass. Is there any loop holes, substidies, any suggestions would be great!

Cobra allows a former employee to continue insurance at the group rate paid by the company. As long as that rate is correct (and $3700 does sound high), that's what he has to pay.

If he worked for that long, why not take early retirement? Many companies continue health insurance for retirees.
