I am going to start riding horses and I was wondering which is better english or western? Which is more fun and better for the horse? In your personal opion which one would you chose?

It depends on where you want to go with your riding. If you want to get into competition then you need to choose a discipline and go from there.eg0 dressage = english, barrel racing = western. For pleasure riding, it depends on your personal preference. Go out on each saddle for a while and see what you prefer. As to what is best for the horse, they are not harmful to the animal as long as the saddle and the rest of the tack fit the horse properly. Eg) the saddle can really be painful for the horse if it is not braod enough for their back. Your local vet or farrier could give you some pointers on this. Don't always trust the salespeople. Many have never even seen a horse and are in it for the money. Not all of them mind you but there are sleaze in all areas of life.

I perfer westren its more fun and laid back then english. I have a friend who rides both. Westren is the easier of the two, I would also say it's the safer of the 2 as well (for the rider). Hope this helps, main thing is have fun and be safe.

Thanks everyone! As you can see I haven't been on my profile in a while! I decided to ride english and have been showing hunter/jumper. However, this year I'm going to try dressage and western pleasure!
