My issue is this: my 1998 tercel has been giving me some trouble. When I try to start it I first turn the key to acc and everything works fine (stereo, lights ect) then I turn the key to start and nothing happens.

After fussing around, moving the transmission through the gears, checking the fuses and battery, it will sometimes start. It seems that if I press firmly on the shift lever forward into park, while I turn the key sometimes it will start.

Anyone else have this problem?

. Check/replace the ignition switch for wear or pitting.

. Check or replace the Automatic Transmission Gear Position Switch:

1. Remove console and disconnect 14-P connector from switch.
2. Remove both console switch mounting nuts.
3. Position switch slider to "Neutral."
4. Move shift lever to "Neutral," then slip switch into position.
5. Attach switch with both nuts.
6. Test switch in Park and Neutral positions of shift lever. Engine should start, when shift lever is in Neutral (anywhere in the range of free play).
7. Connect 14-P connector, clamp harness, and install console.

Your exact situation may be slightly different but similar.

A Toyota remanufactured starter will get you started from here on out.
Test the starter solenoid contacts from the drivers seat by rapidly turning the key from on to start. It will catch eventually without fiddling with the shifter. You'll see.
