View Full Version : 1991 Honda Civic stutters at 1/2 tank, and completely dies at 1/4 tank.

I have a 1991 Honda Civic, LX, and have been repairing everything. Most recently I have replaced the Distributor, Fuel Pump, and Main Relay. Later determined the problems at that time was due to a faulty Main Relay. Anyway, since I replaced the fuel pump the car starts to stutter at 1/2 tank of gas, and dies at 1/4 tank of gas like it was out of gas. You fill it up and it takes off again. Any ideas? Rick

I had the exact problem. I replaced tank, fuel pump with sock, fuel filter, and multiple other things that didn't help. I am so frustrated with it I just fill it up when it hits 1/2 tank. Roughly 200 miles deep into tank it starts up. I talked with so many people and everyone says its inside tank. Well its all new now and still, same issue. I was wondering if it could be sending unit telling ECM it was out of fuel? My gauge always does it at 1/2 tank. I wish you figure it out and PLEASE tell me..
My car has 262K on it now, runs great as long as its above 1/2 tank. Good luck and keep me updated.

All, I figured out what my problem was. After pulling the tank amd new fuel pump again, I realized the OE Airtex replacement had the sock turned 90 degrees from the original. If you look close, the original sock is pointed towards the front of the car, within the baffled box in the tank. The new sock is pointed to the passenger side of the car, and with the angle that the pump sits within the tank, the sock is pointed UP at a 30 degree angle. Then add the fact that the original sock had a 3/4 to 1 inch down tube, vs the replacement which sits flush on the bottom of the pump, your draw is approximately three to four inches higher in the tank. I have not performed the calculations, by this is significant, and by adding the "OLD" sock to the bottom of my new pump, I have fixed the problem. I will forward this information to the company and the online parts company I purchased it from. This problem is all over the internet, but this is the first time an answer of cause has ever been given. Good luck to all, and kick the engineers in the @$% for doing this to us.
