I have a 92 Pontiac Grand Am SE, 5 speed. Lately it has been acting crazy. I will be driving down the road and my cd player will cut off then turn back on, when I hit the brakes my headlights dim, when I get about 60 or 65 the gauges go crazy. I don't what to do or what is wrong with it. Someone please help!

. Test all under dash and under hood fuses with a test light or multimeter. Ensure fuses are clean, tight, and fully seated. If necessary, remove and clean fuses with abrasive cloth.

. Remove and fully charge the battery, which most auto parts stores will do for free. Also, clean battery terminals and cable connections; ensure connections are tight.

. Test the alternator, which most auto parts stores will do for free. If warning lights (e.g. battery, ABS, SRS, or others) start appearing in concert with one another on the dash, immediately suspect the alternator.

. Check/replace the ignition switch for wear, pitting, or melting, if the problem persists.

I suspect the alternator is the main culprit. Replacing the internal brush assembly is likely what's wrong, which is easy to do. The brushes have likely worn so much that they make poor contact and bounce at high speed. AutoZone sells a brush assembly for $9.99, RX101. Most outfits will want to sell you, however, a rebuilt alternator.
