I gave her a ring in proposal of marriage and she said yes but she wouldn't give up her apartment because she didn't want to loose her welfare so I ended the relationship should I get the ring back?

I would say so. She would have lost her welfare if she married you wouldn't she?

That's a tough one. There's stipulations here... if she would have broken it off I would say that you should absolutely get the ring back, but since you broke it off with her then it becomes her choice to return the ring or not. I have actually seen court cases on this subject. Her accepting the ring is a sign of her making a promise (and in turn a sort of verbal contract) to marry you so if SHE breaks it off she is the one who broken the contract and is then almost always required to give it back. The court cases going the other way usually end up with her keeping the ring as a sort of consolation prize for YOU breaking the "contract" between the two of you. Sorry.

Yes your right but she was also waiting to hear from canada pension which would have paid her more.either way I lived with her in her apartment for almost 4 months which was illegal because I supported her with everything and she still took the welfare.then we bought a house and of course with my money.she said she would work if she didn't get the pension which she never got.so that's why she didn't want to give up the apartment she would loose welfare.I was devastated and really didn't understand her reason so that's why I called it off.I took it as she really didn't want to be with me.why pay for two places just doesn't make sense to me.
