After more research online it appears that Effikal flue dampers have a consistently poor track record (mechanically speaking) and are quite familiar to HVAC service personnel... not in a favorable context either.

Can this be switched out with another brand?

Not only is there the inconvenience of having the heat go out there is also a matter of paying for the service call for each occurrence.

Suggestions anyone?
