Chinese for dummies book is good:
Amazon.com: Chinese For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyles Paperback)) (9780764583759): Wendy Abraham: Books (http://www.amazon.com/Chinese-For-Dummies-Lifestyles-Paperback/dp/0764583751)

Or you could try this:
Learning Chinese characters: a revolutionary new way to learn and remember the 800 most basic chinese characters [Book] (http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&q=chinese+character+book&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1528&bih=854&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=10637966729987742853&sa=X&ei=hpWFT-GbOYqp0QWouPC0Bw&ved=0CGQQ8wIwBA#ps-sellers)

BBC Languages Chinese:
BBC - Languages - Chinese: All you need to start learning Chinese (http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/chinese/)

This website has lots of books for Chinese on:
Hanban Book Store (http://hanbanstore.com/bookstore/index.php?cPath=22_33)

And a little book for writing characters in is a good idea, but I couldn't find a link
Good Luck! 好运

Yeah~ I believe Chinese is necessary,I suggest you find some

Professional mandarin institutions,or you can find some private

Tutors, but the fee may high.As I know some good schools, such as

Mandarin Garden (http://www.mandaringarden.org),their school lessons reviews are frequent, and warm, there are also exceed 600 teachers for your choice,so you can get the further information by addressing the following website:
