Hi:

I just had my house inspected and am trying to figure out whether I can fix this valve myself or not, or how much it will cost.

It's a corroded shut off valve in the water heater closet. I've attached a picture.

Thanks!

Most ball valves are brass or stainless. Looks like the stem is leaking a bit and corroded the handle. This valve is soldered in and would have to be unsoldered and replaced either by resoldering or by using a shark bite-gator bit system or a compression adapter. If the valve is not leaking, unscrew the stem nut, remove the handle, wire brush and /or sand the corrosion, put a light coat of oil on it and reassemble.

I agree with Ma0641, if the valve is not leaking remove the handle clean and lubricate, Thanks.
