My dog is at the Vet right now and they have never seen anything like what my 6 year old Lab has. I'm not sure if my dog was poisoned or bit by a spider or what but she was very healthy and a happy dog one day and the next she was acting different and was very sore to stand up. We took her to the Vet and all the blood work and levels are normal so we brought her home and notice that it was getting worse and that she would not eat so we brought her back again and they did more tests and thosewere all normal again. There was a small bump on her back above the spine that had puss in it that they drained. We brought her home again for the weekend and brought her back again on Monday due to it getting worse. Now more fluids were building up on her back that needed draining again. Her skin is bruising and where it is bruising the skin is splitting open and creating an open wound. She seems to have a little more energy since she is being rehydrated through an IV but the open wounds keep appearing. The Vet does not know what to do and has never seen it ever before. Any help would be appreciated.

Perhaps a biopsy or culture would shed some light on whatever may be going on. Some things can be very puzzling even to trained eyes. If your Vet hasn't mentioned it, just ask if he/she thinks that it would beneficial.

If you have a vet collage close I would go for a second opinion. Has your vet consulted any others?

I have to ask. How would going to a vet college help? The people studying to be vets don't know enough to give a diagnosis that an actual vet can't figure out.

I agree that a second opinion isn't a bad idea, but I wouldn't go to students to get that second opinion.

I have a 9 year old female lab with these very same symptoms plus a couple others. Our vet has taken a biopsy and still waiting the results after 2 weeks. All other blood test and test to determine if it was bactoria came back OK. Tney too have no clue as to what is going on. It is terrible watching your pet of 9years deteriorate in front of your eyes if you get any information would you please forward any information to me at <email removed> thank you and good luck if I get any info I will post it here.

Depending on where you live, they usually have a specialist small animal clinic attached to it. The one in Ontario (http://www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/hospital/) is a very large referral hospital that clinics send hundreds of patients to for specialized care.

The original poster hasn't been back since this post was made in January 2012. She's only made this one post on the entire site. It happens a lot. We get people that come, post, don't want to wait for the volunteers to reply, leave, and never come back to check what was posted.

I'm sorry. I hope that the vet can help your Dachshund.
