How do I wire a ceiling fan and light? I have two wall switches. The fan wires consist of a black and red on one side and a black and red on the other side. Incoming wires are black, red, white, and ground. I hooked up the black to the black and red to red on one side and then white to red and ground to black on the other. The result was that one switch turned on the fan and the light. Any ideas?

Are theses side by side switches or at opposite ends of the room? Does the fan have pull chains or any type of remote? Can you rephrase this sentence "The fan wires consist of a black and red on one side and a black and red on the other side." this makes no sense to me.

The switches are in one box and control on/off light dimming and fan speed. The fan does have pull chains for the fan and light. The fan wires are one black and red taped together and another black and red taped together. The wire from the switches is black, red, white and ground.

If any one switch has blacl, red, white and ground then check to see if the flipper is marked ON and OFF. No markings would indicate this is a 3 way switch. If you meant you have a cable coming from the switch box to the fan and the cable has red, black, white and green then I think I got this nailed. White is neutral and common to both fan and light. Red is hot to the light and black hot to the fan. Green is common ground. Now for the switches. Most dimmers can handle most lights but only certain dimmers can be used on a fan. No reostat dimmers allowed, it must be a stepped dimmer, usually 3 steps betweemn OFF and fullest bright. Be sure to always have the pull chains pulled to give highest power and then use the dimmer to do the daily controlling. If everyone starts using both and leaving the pull chains in different positions it will screw up your dimmers control and maybe even the fan.

I am trying to instal a semi-flush ceiling light and the wires that are coming out of the ceiling wiring box are black, white, copper, and a red. All instuctions say white to white, black to black and green to the copper house wire. How to I wire this ceiling light? I also have a double switch.
Thank you

Double wall switch I assume. The black should be the hot to your fan and the red can be the hot to your light kit. The light kits hot wire is most frequently blue, connect red to blue. Now one switch will be for fan and the other for light but you have no variation of speed and light with a plain switch.
