. Check all under hood and under dash fuses with a test light or multimeter.
. Remove and fully charge the battery. Most auto parts stores will do this for free.
. Check for fuel.
. Check for spark. Focus on replacing the points and condenser, setting the dwell angle properly, and checking the timing with a strobe light. Ensure the centrifugal vacuum advance mechanism works properly. All of this should be done about every 20,000 miles on these old engines. It would also be good to replace the distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs (ACDelco), and spark plug wires, and coil, if they have not been changed in a while.
Unless there's something you didn't share with us in specifically identifying the engine, I don't think you have a pick-up coil.
. Remove all of the spark plugs and check each cylinder's compression, if the problem persists.
. Check the ignition switch for wear, pitting, or melting, should the problem still persist.
If you have added an aftermarket electronic ignition system, I would remove it. Many of them are problematic.
