It's about 11 degrees Fahrenheit outside and probably around 65 inside. I opened my window because my room was really stuffy and it had been frozen shut. When I got the window open it felt like the bottom of it was heavier than usual and it basically fell back into place, slamming shut. But when I tried to open it again it stayed open and worked like it usually does. I was wondering if there was a reason it would do this, maybe something to do with the pressure of the room or something? My door was either shut or open just a crack, but it definitely wasn't open more than an inch, if that helps at all. Thanks :)

Depending on the type of window, very possible the counter balance of the window was stuck at first

The windows we have don't have counter balances... I asked my mom haha

Seriously, I think Fr_Chuck has it right. How does your mother know there aren't counter balances in the window? Most have them... and most people do not even know what a counter balance is.

It's a wood window, and the bottom half slides up, but the top half can slide down too, so both can be open at the same time. I really don't think it has counter balances though, what would it look like if it did?

Usually you would see a string or small chain going up the window track on the sides of the window. Sometimes they are hidden pretty well.

I have similar problem in my home. But, I have quite different problem with my window to open at own. I'm managing my window with small iron rod and wooden square for my door.
